Carolina Grotto — also known as Caroline's Cave or Għar ta' Karolina — is a hidden sea grotto tucked into the cliffs of Xlendi Bay, Gozo. You can reach it on foot down a flight of carved cliffside stone stairs from the bay, or by swimming or kayaking around the coast to the grotto, where clear, calm water meets the rock. Beyond its beauty it carries a story: the grotto is linked to Karolina Cauchi and the Augustinian sisters of Gozo, said to have used it as a private bathing place hidden from public view. Visit in the morning or around midday when the water is clearest and the steps easiest to see — and take care, as the stairs and rocks can be uneven and slippery near the water.
